Lack of social media in small towns

I live in a small town. I am originally from Chicago but much later moved 3 hours away. The town (to me) is in the middle of nowhere. It is decent. It has a super Walmart, mall, Macdonalds… it even has a small town style drive-in theater (not with the little speakers but with a radio station). It lacks a White Castle (DAMN!), Burger King is a half hour drive away to the next town, and on a Christmas day the streets look like a scene from I Am Legend.

My problem with the town is that there is a major lack of keeping up with the Jetsons. Not very many real people (only spammers) use the area on Craigslist, and there are even companies out here who still think that it does not matter if they have a website!

I will acknowledge that there are a good number of people here using MySpace. And I am seeing an increase in real Craigslist postings. But I still have a major issue with the lack of social media awareness out here. Any suggestions on improving awareness in a community would be appreciated.

In the meantime I guess I have to get the frozen sliders from the store and deal with it. I can live without Burger King really because I prefer double cheeseburgers from Macdonalds.
